Franny’s Father is a Feminist
Franny’s Father is a Feminist by Rhonda Leet is a cute little book that teaches the reader what it means for a man to be a feminist, and how male feminism can play a vital role in the empowerment of young women.
Franny is a typical, curious, little girl with pink hair, who loves kittens and has a big, red bearded, not so typical teddy bear as a father. Her Dad grew up old-school where boys only did boy things, and girls only did girl things, whether they wanted or not. But he was going to change that once his daughter Franny was born.
When Franny was little, Franny's Dad taught her how to take her bicycle apart and how to fish, he let her play in the mud and dress up as whatever she wanted. He supported her in all her after-school activities from ice hockey to dance.
He wasn't ashamed of his feelings and showed Franny that it's OK to cry - even for boys. And Dads.
He told her about historic women, such as Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space, or Ruby Bridges, who broke down racial barriers between segregated elementary schools, or Malala Yousafsai, who's paving the way for girls to be able to attend school all around the world. He explained to her that she and every child in this world deserve the right to do and be anything they wish, regardless of their gender.
This is a perfect bed time story for Daddy to read to his son or daughter and maybe afterwards to reflect and point out some similarities between Franny’s and their own life.
