Today’s featured book
Do Penguins Have Pediatricians? was written by Patrick O’Donnell and illustrated by Erik Mehlen, the same duo that created Did Dinosaurs Have Dentists?. The two are back with another enjoyable quick read; this one is especially appropriate before a child’s visit to the doctor. The child in this book asks a series of questions involving various animals and illnesses. The cartoon-like pictures help add to the creativity and charm of the book.
Do Penguins Have Pediatricians?
We all know that children ask LOTS of questions, and the child in this book is no different. On the way to the doctor’s office, the child thinks of a number of questions about animals and medical concepts. The questions start from page 1.
Every flip of the page reveals another question, each of which is creative and entertaining. Young children especially will relate to the different ailments that include pink eye, chicken pox, fevers, strep throat, and more. Adults can relate too. After all, how many times have you told your child to zip up a coat?
In the end, we learn the doctor responded favorably to the child’s many questions. Her informative answer was just as cute as the rest of the book. She begins, “Any animal can get sick, whether it’s wild or it’s a pet.
The Verdict
This is a super cute book for younger school-age children. The concept is basic and the illustrations are very entertaining which help make it a very easy and quick read. There is also a glossary at the end that gives information about the 14 different animals mentioned in this book. After reading this with my 3 & 6 year old kiddos, they spent the next 10 minutes coming up with questions of their own. So beware, this book sparks creativity and silliness!
