Today’s featured book Pop Pop Airplane How Do You Fly? was written by Dan Pegram and illustrated by Mike Richardson. This is a fun educational book for beginning readers interested in airplanes and how they work. The rhyming pages and bright, delightful illustrations command attention and keep kids entertained as they turn the pages.

Pop Pop Airplane How Do You Fly?

The inspiration for this cute story apparently came from the author’s grandchildren. After a quick read of the dedication page at the beginning, we learn that Dan Pegram was an airline pilot and his grandchildren nicknamed him Pop-Pop. Fittingly, Pop-Pop is the name of the Airplane in this charming book. Pop-Pop narrates the book and tells us all about different parts of the plane and what they do.

The illustrations are fun and whimsical. They depict both boys and girls, light and dark skin, straight and curly hair alike. My children (ages 3 and 6) felt like they were part of this class listening to Pop-Pop speak. As a parent, I found it a neat touch that the book gave subtle shout-outs to the USAF and Texas Rangers baseball team (bits related to the author) through its pictures. I’m no Rangers fan either, I just thought it was an interesting little detail.

Pop-Pop introduces readers to all new vocabulary and parts of the plane. In 1-2 simple sentences per page, Pop-Pop is able teach about what each of these parts does. Some of the new vocabulary includes: tires, wings, rudders, elevators, ailerons, and engines.

The Verdict

This is a fun and entertaining book, but is most definitely for a younger audience. It is simple enough to keep wandering minds attentive and interested. It would be a great book to bring along on a plane ride, or to read just prior to a plane trip to generate excitement. My 6 year old decided he is going to pack this book on our next flight! So now, we just need to book a trip somewhere!
