Today's featured books, My Daddy is a Monster/My Kids are Monsters and My Mummy is a Monster/My Children are Monsters by Natalie Reeves Billing and illustrated by Lisa Williams are part of “The Monstrous Me Collection”. Both books are uniquely engaging and describe one story from two points of view, the children's and the father's and mother's respectively. Once you reach a certain place in the book, you flip the book over and read it again, it’s the same, yet different.
My Daddy is a Monster/My Kids are Monsters
My Daddy is a Monster/My Kids are Monsters tells the story of a little boy and his sister and how they think their daddy makes them do all sorts of unreasonable things!
The children describe their day with Dad and all the rules they have to follow from wearing seatbelts to attending a soccer game, sounds terrible huh?? It all turns out alright though and the little boy realizes how much his daddy cares for him after all.
When you flip the book around, you read the same story from the Dad’s perspective!
This was a very cool feature and as a parent, this gave me the opportunity to explain to my child why certain behaviors can make Daddy upset sometimes. Another cool fact about this book, is there are “Monstrometers” hidden throughout the book which makes for a fun side activity to look for hem throughout the story.
My Mummy is a Monster/My Children are Monsters
My Mummy is a Monster/My Children are Monsters tells the story of a little girl and her brother and how they think their mummy treats them SO horribly by making them do all sorts of things THEY don’t think children should have to do.
The children describe their day and all the hardships the children face, from brushing their hair and teeth, to carrying their own backpacks home from school! Oh the horror!! This side of the book finishes with some cuddles and kind words while the little girl realizes how much she loves her mum after all!
When you flip the book around, you read the same story from the Mum’s perspective!
The Verdict
We loved these books. They're wonderfully inventive and contain a cool “flip/flop” factor, which allows the reader to engage in the story from two points of view!
The artwork was colorful and fun and the story was engaging and cute.
