166,050 Children in Central Texas Are Affected By Food Insecurity

Central Texas is among the fastest growing regions in the nation. While it means growth and prosperity for some, due to the rising cost of housing, utilities, transportation, and healthcare, many of our neighbors are left behind. Many of those neighbors are children.

• 166,050 children in Central Texas
• 61,250 children in Travis County
• 27,160 children in Williamson County
• 8,990 children in Hays County
• 4,790 children in Bastrop County
• 2,360 children in Caldwell County

are affected by hunger and food insecurity.

Definition of Food Insecurity
Food insecurity refers to USDA’s measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. Food insecure children are those children living in households experiencing food insecurity.

Food insecure households are not necessarily food insecure all the time. Food insecurity may reflect a household’s need to make trade-offs between important basic needs, such as housing or medical bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods.

Thanks to the commitment from private, government and charitable partners, the Central Texas Food Bank was able to bring 31 million meals to our community last year and into the hands of families and local nonprofits that turn to them for help.
